Recently, I had high hopes of putting a 2.6 kernel on my notebook, which runs Win4Lin. I’ll spare you the on-going events and get to my point. Kernel developers and the companies that make kernel modules for their products, need to get together and find a better solution. Currently, I can’t upgrade my kernel to get new features until Win4Lin gets around to making a new patch for that kernel. They have to make a patch for “vanilla” kernels (Ie, kernel.org), Mandrake, Red Hat, Fedora, Debian etc etc. Then they have to make a patch for each version of the kernel for each of those distros. It’s ludicrous. NVidia is about the best option available, but that’s only because they don’t patch the kernel with anything, so all you have to do is reinstall the module after a kernel upgrade. Still not the best way of doing things.
I have no answer, and I’m not going to blame anyone for this problem. I’m merely going to complain about it a little in the hopes that someone cares and can do something about it.
