Normally, I get a good laugh reading (or listening on a podcast) John “I Get No Spam” C. Dvorak. This blow-hard is often so out of touch with reality that it’s just plain amusing to hear him talk about things. Like his spam problem. Someone filters it out for him, so he claims he doesn’t get any. Just because it’s not in your inbox, doesn’t mean you don’t get any.
Anyway. I followed a digg link, and ended up at Dvoraks’ PCMag column. Here he talks about digital cameras as though he’s been reviewing them for decades, stating his favourites and questions the position of other companies in the market. I tried hard to find the fault in this column, but damned if I could. I just passed by his personal preference remarks and got to the meat of the story. Basically, the demise of Konica/Minolta was caused by poor, or no marketing. They had such wonderful offerings that no one knew about. Sadly, the same applies to several other companies, including Pentax, my personal choice for photography needs.
Now the rumour goes that Sony will pick up the K/M pieces and continue the line. My ass. They’ll steal the lens mount, or just make a converter, so they can take advantage of all the glass already out there. Then they’ll make a half hazzard attempt at a camera and charge out the ass for the Sony monicker. If we’re lucky, they’ll use the stabilization from K/M so they at least have something. They also have decent censors (I believe I use one in my Pentax). You’d think that with all that, they could make a decent camera. I would love to be wrong this time.
