Online shopping in Canada.

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

It has long been rumoured that Canada is one of the most connecting countries, yet we’re years behind the States in online shopping. I recently needed some computer parts so went over to Tigerdirect.ca to make an order up. I’ve spent a small fortune with Tigerdirect over the years and have come to enjoy using them, despite all the rants I see about the American version. The Canadian version has always been great. Until now. I noticed the packages started coming from the States, which means it takes over 4 business days to get delivered to my door. Recently, I tried another order, and it took 6 days for them to tell me the power supply I wanted wasn’t available any longer.

Enough being enough, I tried to order something from NCIX.com, the other large online computer parts retailer, this time out of Vancouver, where I would save the PST since I’m in Ontario. Yah, took them 4 days to even put the parts in a box!

I read a quick forum discussion once about ordering things online. One guy can order something online in the morning, and it shows up at his door that afternoon. That’s the service I want here. The logistics system works fine, since packages can go across the country over night without hassle. It’s taking 3-4 days it takes to fill the order that needs help.

UPDATE: I just can’t win. Bought a camera from a reputable ebay seller. This seller is the ebay/online branch of Carmens Photo, a popular branch in Ontario. The camera had that “Too good to be true” price point, but from a seller with over a 99% rating. I waited 10 business days. Apparently the shipment of cameras they were expecting (and pre sold!) was sent to England instead of Canada, so I had to wait for it to make the return trip before it was shipped to me.

Snow storm drivers

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2005

I had the misfortune this past weekend to be driving on the highway (401 from Ottawa to London, Ontario) during the second worst snow storm we’ve had this year. Here are several words I would like everyone to read:
1. SLOW DOWN. 40km/h is fine if it means making it home safe.
2. LEAVE ROOM. Do you really need to follow so close to the car in front of you that you couldn’t stop in time even if the road conditions were perfect? Seriously, on several occasions, the person behind me was so close I couldn’t even see headlights anymore.
3. STAY IN YOUR LANE. Switching lanes all the time is what causes you to lose control of your vehicle, especially when you aren’t following rule #1. Those foot thick banks in between the lanes aren’t as easy to drive through as you think.
4. GET OFF THE ROAD IF IT’S TOO BAD. We pulled over for an hour or so to give the plows a chance to get through. It slowed down a little, which let us get through, but the hotel across the road from the Tim’s we stopped at looked real comfy.
5. SLOW THE FUCK DOWN. Do not drive 80 when everyone else is doing 40. And for crying out loud, don’t pass them on the right, which is actually the shoulder of the road because you can’t even see the bloody lanes anymore. If you can’t see the road underneath you because of the snow, how the hell do you think driving 80km/h is safe?

I rarely wish people ill-will beyond the simple derogatory comment about their weight and hygiene, but had I gotten my wishes that night, several people would have died horrible deaths.

Londonphotoclub.com

Sunday, June 13th, 2004

I just put a “new” site online called London Photo Club. This is a forum/community site for people in the London, Ontario area to share photos and give/get help from other photographers.
This site is actually an old site which I purchased and brought back online. It comes with several active users, so I thought it would be nice for them to just pick up where they left off. There’s still lots to do

I also purchased Canadian Photo Club, but its not quite up and running yet. Hopefully this turns out to be a good investment, and I can manage to create a wonderful community out of it.
